Event in the Russian Embassy on the Law of the Sea

On December 9, the Russian Embassy in the Netherlands hosted an event organized by Le Club de Droit International and the University of Angers entitled “Judicial Settlement under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea: an insider’s view of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea”.

The Ambassador of Russia to the Netherlands Alexander Shulgin addressed the participants with a welcoming speech. Honored guests were the judge of the Tribunal Roman Kolodkin and the Registrar of the International Court of Justice Philippe Gautier. The discussion was moderated by Alina Miron, Professor of the University of Angers.

Roman Kolodkin and Philippe Gautier shared their vision of settlement of interstate disputes on the law of the sea in various judicial bodies. They analyzed the latest trends in this area and, in particular, the problems of fragmentation of international law and the proliferation of bodies of international justice, and also noted the specificity and advantages of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, sharing their own experience in ITLOS.

The event was attended by representatives of the diplomatic corps and legal circles of The Hague, as well as employees of international organizations which headquarters are in the Netherlands.
